The preparation

First, a quick note. There are various cornmeal manufacturers for arepas. The amount of water required may therefore vary. Be sure to read the information on the packaging.

Step 1:

Put the water and salt in a bowl and stir. Then add the flour and knead until the mixture no longer sticks to your hands.

Step 2:

Heat a large frying pan without fat or oil. Shape the dough into hand-sized flatbreads. When the pan is hot, reduce the heat to low and place the flatbreads in the pan. Fry for 5-10 minutes on each side. If you like, you can then bake them in the oven for about 5 minutes at approx. 150 degrees top and bottom heat. This will make them even fluffier.

The second way to prepare arepas is to fry them. Simply place the shaped flatbreads in hot oil in a deep fryer and fry until golden brown.

Step 3:

Cut the arepas open with a knife and fill them. Suitable fillings include fried minced meat, black beans, cheese, sausage, vegetables, sauces such as yoghurt or cream sauce, and much more. Arepas are simply a classic South American dish and are super delicious.
